World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an opportunity to raise the consciousness of suicide around the world, to highlight efforts that take place globally, nationally, and regionally but to also highlight the role of the individual. We can all play a role in preventing suicides.

Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in conjunction with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the day aims to focus attention on the issue, reduce stigma and raise awareness amongst organisations, government, and the public giving the singular message that suicides are preventable.

This year’s theme is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’. encouraging people to start the conversation and help reduce stigma by discussing suicide prevention in a really open way.

Suicidal thoughts are more common than people realise, with suicide being the biggest killer of men under 49 and women aged 20 to 34. Research shows that using the word ‘suicide’ appropriately let’s other people know it is ok to talk about suicidal feelings and that the person asking is there to listen.

Suicide can affect every one of us. However, by raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide, and encouraging well-informed action, we can reduce instance of suicide.

There are many ways you can play your part in suicide prevention, and taking part in some training is a great start. You can undertake the Zero Suicide Alliance FREE online training – a 20-minute course which will teach you the skills and confidence to have a potentially life-saving conversation with someone you’re worried about. Or you can book yourself onto  See the Signs training.

You can also help to raise awareness of support services such as the Suicide Prevention Pathways Service, bereavement by Suicide Support Services and Samaritans .

The toolkits here have lots of useful information about how you can help to change the narrative this World Suicide Prevention Day and support suicide prevention in your organisation and community.
